In my first feature for the artwork of a contemporary game, it was hard to go past Dixit. Marie Cardouat is the professional artist responsible for all 84 of the card illustrations.
For those already familiar with the game, you don’t need me to tell you that her work is unique and remarkable. Her style is playful, even whimsical, and feminine, and at times quite deep and mysterious.
Yep – that’s a lot of hoopy adjectives right there. But as I said there are 84 unique images in this game, all of which have a variety of both concrete features as well as visual metaphors.
Dixit just recently won the highly-coveted 2010 Spiel des Jahres award. It’s success is all about the cleverness of the artwork, which allows multiple interpretations, or “stories” to be applied to any given card. The players have to match a subjective clue to a piece of card art twice in each game turn – first by trying to match one of their own secret cards to the storyteller’s clue and second, by trying the guess which is the storyteller’s card based on their clue.
Engaging and challenging, and so much artwork to soak in in one game.
Marvelous.
